The imposing structure of the Palazzo dei Consoli symbol of Gubbio’s medieval power, dominates – in size and beauty – the historical center. Built between 1332 and 1337 by Matteo di Giovannello, also known as “Gattapone” or by Angelo da Orvieto (according to others), the result is an elegant and majestic structure, delicately decorated with a series of hanging arches, a fan-shaped staircase and a Gothic portal. The latter leads into the city’s major museums, the Museo Civico and the Pinacoteca Comunale (Civic Art Gallery) with its display of works by local painters as well as by Tuscan masters. Included are pieces by Pietro Paolo Baldinacci, Benedetto and Virgilio Nucci, Francesco Damiani and two plates by famous Renaissance ceramicist, Mastro Giorgio Andreoli. The bell tower houses the famous “campanone” (or big bell), which is rung on special occasions. The square is completed by the Gothic Palazzo Pretorio (Town Hall), which was built at the end of the 15th century by Gattapone as the original seat of the Podestà (city rulers).
